New Feature: Multiple lists, Life lists, etc.

By popular demand, YardBirder.net now allows multiple lists under your user account.

Why Multiple Lists?

The two main reasons people gave me:

  1. They wanted a place to keep their life list.
  2. They have multiple yards.

What else is new with this change?

  1. Individual lists don’t have to be associated with a location (very helpful for a life list).
  2. Individual lists don’t have to track dates (I wanted my life list this way).
  3. On dated lists (the default), you can now have a section of undated birds. You can add an undated bird to a dated list by blanking out the date field when adding the bird (my mother requested this because she wants to add birds she’s seen in the past to her yard list but doesn’t know the exact dates).
  4. On each of list pages, there are links to your other lists towards the bottom of the page (if you have additional lists).

How do you create a new list?

There is now a link called “Your Lists” towards the top-right corner of each page. Click on that and you’ll see the link for adding a new list. When creating a new list, you’ll see options for location and dates.

How do I modify the location, date settings of an existing list?

Use the “Your Lists” link and then “modify list settings”.
What lists does Chris have now?

I’ve been using this feature too! Indeed! My original idea for the site came about because I wanted a simple way to track my yard list online. Here are my lists:

Sorry this took longer than I had originally thought! Since the site was originally designed for only yard lists, I had to do a lot of changes to make this work and keep the site simple. Also, as many of you know, my “real” job, my two month old baby and my 9 month old dog all occasionally keep me busy :) Any way…enjoy!

More improvements are on the way as time permits.

Chris

P.S. About that old saying is “Nothing new ever works”. So even though I’m pretty sure everything works with these new features and I’ve been using them myself, it will be very helpful to let me know if you find something that doesn’t quite work like it’s supposed to.

Introducing YardBirder, the blog.

What is YardBirder, the blog?

Just a nice, simple way to write about new features and other issues about Yardbirder.net.  I thought this would be a good way to write about minor features and tips that do not warrant a full email.
